The Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, will be appearing before the National Assembly today to defend his office after 291 lawmakers signed a petition seeking to impeach him.
While addressing the media at his Karen residence yesterday, the embattled DP disputed the charges set up against his office, terming them malicious and unfounded.
Last week, a Kibwezi West member of parliament, Hon. Mwengi Mutuse, tabled the 100-page impeachment motion before the national assembly following the contentious days of the petition appendment of signatures, which drew approximately three hundred participants.
A section of lawmakers who felt discontent with Gachagua’s public terms, deemed retrogressive and tribal, have asserted their earlier intention to remove him from the office.
On Sunday, the besieged DP made remorseful statements while at a church service, asking the president and Kenyans at large for forgiveness.
“I want to say to my brother, President William Ruto, if our zeal to work has wronged you, please find in your heart to forgive me.”
“If my spouse (Dr. Dorcas Rigathi), in our duties for the boychild under her program, has wronged you, find it in your heart to forgive her,” the DP appeared remorseful during a church service in Karen.
The DP also took a bold step to seek forgiveness from the dissenting members of parliament and the Kenyans, who appear unbothered by their actions. A good number of Kenyans have maintained that the impeachment motion giants the deputy is not a primary issue and have chided MPs for neglecting their core mandate on addressing the pressing issues.
“To the people of Kenya, in our services across the country, serve you if there is anything we have done or said that’s unpalatable, that you find unacceptable; please find it in your heart to forgive me,” he added.
The just-ended public participation in his removal from the office also proved futile for both William Ruto and his DP, as a section of Kenyans instead demanded their resignation, accusing them of enabling a biting environment of survival.
The outspoken DP is being accused of gross misconduct, including corruption and engaging in money laundering activities, allegedly making false malicious statements, insubordination of the president, and harassing of public officials.
In his abrasiveness, Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to fight to the end. He also debunked the allegations of acquiring undocumented wealth worth Ksh5.2 billion in just two years in the office. He said he had been a businessman before becoming the Deputy President and also shares from his late brother, Nderitu Gachagua.
