The Cabinet Secretary for Education just released the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) after more than a month of waiting. While there has been improvement in overall performance, the KNEC portal has been inaccessible for many who are trying to get their results after the Ministry discontinued the SMS option.
For the first time, female candidates outnumbered males in the KCSE examinations. A total of 962,512 candidates sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2024 exams. Out of this, 480, 310 were male candidates, while 482, 202 were female candidates.
Mathematics was among the 17 subjects that recorded an improvement. 10 subjects however showed an overall drop in performance compared to 2023. Biology, physics, and chemistry also saw an improvement in performance. Humanities; History & Governance also showed an improvement.
Female candidates recorded a stellar performance in 7 subjects than the male candidates, while the male candidates performed better in 23 subjects than their female counterparts, according to the CS for Education, Dr. Julius Ogamba.

“Male students recorded a better mean score performance than female candidates in 23 subjects, and these are Mathematics (alternative A and B), Biology & Biology for the Blind, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History & Government, Geography, IRE, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building and Construtcion, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing & Design, Aviation Technology, Agriculture, Computer Studies, German, Arabic, Music, and Business Studies.”
The KCSE 2024 Performance by Gender Distribution
A total of 1,693 candidates scored A, with 1,137 of them being male candidates and 556 female. 7,743 candidates managed to score A(-) minus: 4,903 males and 2,840 females. Similarly, staggering 19,150 candidates scored B(+) plus: 11,042 male and 8,108 female.
At least 43,120 students got a mean score of B, with 23,339 of them being male candidates and 19,781 being female candidates. Out of the 75,347 candidates who scored a mean grade of B(-) in the 2024 KCSE exams, 39,950 were male candidates, while 35,397 were female candidates.
A total of 99,338 candidates scored a mean grade of C+, among them 48,940 males and 50,397 females. This brings the total number of candidates who have qualified for direct entry to Unversity to 246,391 in 2024 after achieving the C+ and above minimum mean grade.
This is the highest ever recorded direct university entry, compared to 201,133 candidates in 2023 KCSE exams who achieved the same qualification.
Male candidates posted the highest entry, with 150,493 expected to join the university in 2025, compared to 95,898 female candidates who have qualified for direct university entry with a grade of C+ and above.
The highest number of students scored a mean grade of D and D-, 153,334 and 151,487, respectively. 60,088 males and 68,797 female candidates scored a mean grade of D. Similarly, 79, 306 and 72, 181, both male and female candidates, scored a mean grade of D- in the 2024 KCSE exams.
Additionally, a total of 48,333 candidates scored E: 28,221 males and 20,112 females. The results of 2,829 candidates in the KCSE 2024 exams were withheld due to suspected examination malpractices, pending investigation within the next 30 days.
The results of 840 candidates were canceled due to confirmed irregularities. Therefore, a total of 3,669 candidates missed their results on cheating suspicion.
