Today, in Nairobi, Kenya, the National Assembly received the much-awaited motion to remove the deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, from office. The house speaker, Moses Wetangula, approved the motion go-ahead after confirming the authenticity of all the charges, including gross violation of the office.
Thoughts were initially shifted by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Hon. Mutuses, who took to the house floor to list at least eleven charges against the deputy president, although the move was anticipated to come from the Kenya Kwanza lawmaker. Hon. Mutuse was elected on Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket.
A staggering 291 lawmakers appended their signatures in support of the controversial motion, Hon. Mutuse read. The majority leader, Hon. Kimani Ichungwa, Kikuyu constituency lawmaker, is among the notable pro-impeachment members who fully supported the motion.
Although a higher number was anticipated, it turned out that at least four seats are empty, including Opiyo Wandayi’s, the former minority leader who is currently the CS for Energy.
On Friday, October 4, 2024, starting tomorrow, the speaker announced that the motion to remove the deputy president will take place in 47 counties following its approval by the house business committee.
Gachagua faces violations of several provisions of the constitution, including Articles 10 and 27 of the constitutions, for promoting ethnic bias and division as the deputy president.
He’s expected to appear before the National Assembly on October 8th, 2024, either through his legal representatives or both, for the hearing and consideration of the said charges.
