The National Assembly is currently holding a special meeting following two days of a hot debate and determination of the proposed removal of the now, former deputy president of the republic of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua.
The removal of Gachgua was upheld by the Senate after 282 members of National Assembly vehemently voted to impeached him on all 11 grounds.
Yesterday, the Senate, consisting of 67 members, voted to approve 5 grounds, setting a landmark and historical move by the parliament under the 2010 constitution as being the first time to have constitutionally removed the deputy president from the office.
As enshrined in Atricle 149 of the constitution of Kenya, the President have the sutjority to nominate the new DP within 14 days, upon the vacancy declaration of the office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.
However, the new nominee, as stipulated in Atricle 148 of the constitution, shall be deemed to have served as a full term Depputy President, if at the date on which the person assumed the office more than two and a half remain before the date of the next scheduled regular elections.
The Dpeuty President, now former was admitted to the hospital after experiicneing a mild chest pains—a communication issued to the senate chamber by the Paul Muite’s-legal team who requested for the postponment of the impeachment proceedings.
The Senate however, went ahead with session, which was suspended for almost 3 hrs following the tragic announncemnt of Gachagua’s ailment. Members agreed to continue despite the protests by his legal team and a section of Senators.
Kenyans remain divided over the outcome as reported by Kenya’s media outlets, collecting the views and emotional sentiments from the grassroot levels. Initially, as ection of Kenyans wanted both the President and the second in command to exit the office.
Following the impeachment of the deputy, a section of Kenyans have applauded the process, while others feel betrayed especially electorates from the Gachaguas backyard who now feel have been used by Ruto to clinch the top seat.
Deputy President, Rigathi Gachgaua now former after impeachment will be barred from holding any public office in the Republic of Kenya in the next 10 years as stipulated in the constitutions.
The ousted deputy could now remain with only one option to fight for his fate, which is the Supreme Court. However, his attempt to thwart the approval of his removal failed to materialize in the high court.
