The government is advertising 4,888 housing units under the Affordable Housing Program, a project launched by President Uhuru’s regime as part of the Big Four Agenda. President Ruto has been championing for the project, which targets both low and middle-income earners. The project also aims at eradicating shanties in the urban centers.

“We are to announce the launch of the sale of affordable housing units, reaffirming our commitment to providing quality homes for all Kenyans. Please note that the prices currently displayed on this platform are provisional and are being reviewed to align with the updated rates. We remain committed to delivering affordable housing to all Kenyans.”

The monthly repayment for all the above housing units includes both the service charge and insurance. The government has also assured those replaced during the construction of the housing units to apply, for they will be given a priority.

The affordable housing project under President William Ruto’s administration has faced massive criticism from the formal sector. While the former regime built houses without overtaxing Kenyans, Ruto’s administration introduced a housing levy in 2023, requiring a monthly contribution of 1.5% by both the employer and the employee.

An attempt to squash the housing levy through the courts proved futile, leaving the employed with no option but to take the paycuts home. Ruto’s regime has maintained that social housing and affordable housing are the only solutions to the housing crisis in Kenya, despite the criticism.

But one question still lingers, which many Kenyans are still asking: how will the unprivileged household living in Kibera Slums afford the unit? Another question is that: what happens after the regime change? The government has kept the drum sound, claiming that the project has employed over one hundred thousand, both from the formal and the informal sectors.

Those who wish to apply fro the housing units are advised to have an active eCitizen account and can therafter, apply by dialing *832# or viait the Boma Yangu web portal to register aand apply.
