Governor of Kericho, Eric Mutai, Could Be Impeached for Serious Misconduct
The Governor of Kericho County, Eric Mutai, has found himself in a political crisis after a member of the county assembly proposed an impeachment motion over alleged gross misconduct, spanning sexual assault to mismanagement of public resources.
An impeachment motion was brought forth by Hon. Kiprotich Rogony, the Sigowet Ward representative, and it has since been approved by Dr. Patrick Cheruiyot Mutai, the Speaker of the Kericho County. Hon. Mutai alleges that the governor has been operating with no regard to the rule of law.
The proposed motion alleges that the governor invaded private land, whose ownership is linked to Mr. Joseph Kiplangat Kogo, tore down the fence, and has since turned it into an illegal dumpsite without the proprietor’s consent and approval by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).
The governor has also been accused of forcefully engaging in unconsented and unprotected anal sex with female partners. The person who’s reportedly seeking anonymity at the moment will be making a statement virtually during the motion hearing and will only be identified by a pseudonym for protection of her dignity.
The motion has also labeled the governor a fearmonger. He has been accused of persistently intimidating, molesting, and harassing county officers who do not align with his opinions, which has since created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among the county officers.
If successfully executed, then it’ll be the second time a governor is being impeached in just two years in office since 2022. Kawira Mwangaza, Meru Governor, who has been impeached three times, is currently operating at the mercies of the court after the Senate stayed her impeachment over gross office misconduct.
