  • The Energy and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reduced the prices of petrol, diesel, and kerosene by more than Ksh. 2 each.
  • The prices of Super Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene will therefore retail at Ksh. 176.29, Ksh. 165.06, and Ksh. 148.39, respectively, in Nairobi.

The Energy and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) just announced the December-January pump prices, and there is a little relief for Kenyan households and businesses that rely on petroleum products. New prices for super petrol, diesel, and kerosene, effective December 15, 2024, will lapse in January 14th, 2025.

“In accordance with Section 101 (y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No. 192 of 2022, the Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products, which will be in force from 15th December 2024 to 14th January 2025,” EPRA announced.

The maximum allowable pump prices have been reduced by Ksh. 4.37/liter, Ksh. 3.00/liter, and Ksh. 3.00/liter for petrol, diesel, and kerosene, respectively. All the prices are inclusive of the VAT of 16%, EPRA said.

“The prices are inclusive of the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in line with the provisions of the Finance Act 2023, the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020, and the revised rates for excise duty adjusted for inflation as per Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.”

The gradual reduction comes amid the continuous decrease in the landing cost of the imported petroleum products. Kenya imports it’s fuel, which is heavily affected by the unprecedented global market shakeups. Thus includes the overreliance on the US dollar as a benchmark currency for international trades.

EPRA announced that the average landing cost of imported Super Petrol decreased by 4.46% from US$641.14 per cubic meter in October 2024 to US$612.53 in November 2024. However, diesel increased by 5.6% from US$ 608.61 to US$ 643.69 per cubic meter. Additionally, the landing cost for kerosene per cubic meter increased by 1.87% from US$648.15 to US$660.30 during the period.

Therefore, the prices of super petrol, diesel, and kerosene will retail at Ksh. 176.29, 165.06, and 148.39 in Nairobi, effective December 15th, 2024, until January 14th, 2025.
