Dickson Ndiema, the ex-husband of the Ugandan marathoner Rebecca Chepetegei, was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret.
Ndiema, who only received 30% burn, was admitted to the same hospital on the ill-fated day that later claimed the life of the long-distance runner.
He’s been in the hospital’s ICU battling for his own actions that sealed the fate of Rebecca Cheptegei in a heart wrenching manner. He died days after Cheptegei passed on in the same hospital.
Cheptegei is set to be buried on Saturday on an arrangement between the governments of Kenya and Uganda in a military burial, according to The Star.
The marathoner sustained 80% burns in a long-term family wrangles that turned tragic last Sunday after Ndiema reportedly set her ablaze after dousing with petrol. The squabbles have since been linked to the piece of land that Cheptegei bought in Western Kenya, where she’s been training.
The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital confirmed that Ndiema died on Monday night, where he’s receiving treatment at the Inensive Care Unit.
A postmortem will be done on Cheptegei’s body on Wednesday; thereafter, she’ll be taken to Transzoia County in Western Kenya for a night vigil.
In a coordinated arrangement with the UPDF, the body will be ferried to Uganda on Friday, where another night vigil will be held pending her send-off at Bukwo in the eastern part of Uganda.
Officials from both Kenya and Uganda are expected to attend the burial. Rebecca Cheptegei will be laid to rest in a military style. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, confirmed that she’s been a member of UPDF.
