The Inspector General of Police, Japheth Koome, has resigned following weeks of unwavering anti-government protests across major towns in Kenya. Koome succeeded General Hilary Mutyambai on September 27, 2022, after President Ruto’s swearing-in.
There has been mounting pressure on the IG Koome after the brutal conduct of peaceful protesters by police officers across the country, which has seen many abducted and murdered in cold blood.
President Ruto has therefore appointed Mr. Douglas Karanja, the Deputy Inspector of the Kenya Police Service, as the acting Inspector-General of the National Police Service, pending the nomination of the next IG and approval by the president.
In accordance with Section 13 of the National Police Service Act, President Ruto has appointed Mr. Eliud Langat as the acting Deputy Inspector-General of the Kenya National Police Service and Mr. Eliud Kamau as the acting Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.
Mr. Patrick Mwiti Arandu has been appointed by the President as the Commissioner General of Prisons. He succeeds Brigadier (RTD) John Warioba, who is proceeding on terminal leave pending the end of his tenure in office.
A continuous call by citizens for the resignation of the Nairobi Regional Police commander, Adams Bungei, who has been accused of abetting and going silent on abductions and murder of innocent protesters within Nairobi County, hasn’t hit the dead end yet.
Meanwhile, 9 suspected bodies of the anti-government protest victims have been retrieved by residents from the marshy Kware slum in the Embakasi area of Nairobi. The bodies have been brought to the Nairobi City morgue as the search for more possible bodies continues.
