The government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, has announced tens of job opportunities for the unemployed Kenyans interested in working abroad. The Cabinet Secretary for the ministry, Dr. Alfred Mutua, however, did not disclose the agency or the company seeking prospects to work in Qatar.
Mutua announced on his X handle, formerly Twitter that the interviews, which are slated to sunset on Sunday, will be conducted in Nairobi on various fields, targeting specific qualified individuals.
“A Qatari company, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, is in Nairobi conducting interviews for various job opportunities over the next two days,” CS Mutua stated on X.
Job seekers are encouraged to dress in black & white or overall to be well groomed and accompany themselves with the curriculum vitae, a passport-sized photo, and a passport. Arrangements will be made for those who lack the passports upon securing the opportunity.
The interviews are currently taking place in two separate locations: Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) and Kabete National Polytechnic for the hospitality and service industry and construction and technical roles, respectively. The following are the Qatari jobs the government has encouraged to apply for.
Hospitality & Service Industry
The company is seeking the following under this category; Nurses, Commis, Demi Chef, Chef de Partie, Kitchen Helpers, Bar Backs, Runners, Waiteresses, Stewarding Supervisors, Kids Attendants, Hotel Maintenance Technicians, Light Vehicle Drivers and Heavy Vehicle Drivers.
Construction & Technical Industry
Excavator, mobile crane, skid loader, backhoe loader, single drum roller, telehandler, boom truck, water tanker, tipper truck, and tower crane operators will be hired under this category.
Also, rigger signalmen, construction helpers, cleaners, storekeepers, electricians, plumbers, masons, tile layers, steel fixers, painters, welders, and scaffolders are needed.
“Only candidates for the listed job openings will be allowed entry,” Mutua said. He has also encouraged the candidates to familiarize themselves with the industry and job duties. The interview sessions will be running from 7:30 am, including practical tests.
In the early morning today, hundreds thronged the KICC and Kabete National Polytechnic to try their luck, with most of them being the youthful generation, who recently graduated.
Since coming to the office, Ruto’s administration has been advocating for foreign gigs to have thousands of Kenyans absorbed into various fields, especially in the Middle East and Europe. President Ruto himself has made more than 60 trips abroad, most probably in the name of attracting investors and seeking employment opportunities for Kenyans.
Kenyans objected to the idea and accused the government of promoting modern slavery and braindrain after failing to create job opportunities for Kenyans and even creating a hostile environment for Kenyans.
Kenya’s unemployment rate stands at 5%, with the risk of rendering more educated and skilled Kenyans jobless should the tandem continue in the coming years. The country pours thousands of graduates annually, with no place to start from. They’ve also blamed the government’s hostile environment for running businesses despite being jobless.
