The East African telecom giant Safaricom has extended M-PESA Global to Ethiopia two years after rolling its network into the horn of Africa’s economic powerhouse.
Safaricom has said that its decision to adjunct its cross-border transaction network to Ethiopia was propelled by the need to strengthen regional integration through seamless transactions between the two countries.
M-PESA Global will enable several customers to make mobile transactions from Kenya to Ethiopia, a move that’s also expected to attract more users into the network and boost local economies as well as opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Ethiopia-Kenya cross-border transactions are now possible for M-PESA customers in Kenya who wish to make mobile money transfers to Ethiopia through the International Remittances service, which will only require M-PESA wallets for users in both countries.
The M-PESA mobile money transfer is currently available in over 190 countries, opening doors for the diaspora community and corporations to run transactions seamlessly.
