The newly announced list of the top-ranking universities by the Times Higher Learning has placed Kenyatta University in the spotlight in Kenya, overtaking the University of Nairobi in 2025 for the first time.
Both Kenyatta University and the University of Nairobi were both ranked at position 1501 worldwide. This placed both prestigious institutions above the rank of all universities in Eastern and Central Africa.
However, among the top leading universities in Africa are located in South Africa and Egypt, in which South Africa’s Cape Town University emerged in the top 200.
Kenyatta University pulled a stellar score on the teaching strategies and international outlook, scoring 14.2 and 56.1 outperforming the University of Nairobi, which scored 12.5 in teaching and 49.4 on international outlook.
In research environment, research quality, and industry, the University of Nairobi pulled a stunning 9.8, 37.3, and 18.9 scores, respectively. Kenyatta University was closely second with 8.9 in research environment, 27.2 in research quality, and 17.2 in industry.
Among other notable universities appearing in the top 10 are Amref International University, Kisii University, Machakos University, and Kibabii University.
