The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has recommended five individuals linked to the Gen Z-led demonstrations to be charged with criminal offense incitement, conspiracy to commit felony, and money laundering.
The four individuals include the Embakasi Central Legislature, Hon. Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi, alias (Mejja Donk), the Embakasi North Member of Parliament, Jame Mwangi Gakuya, the former Embakasi West Member of Parliament, Hon. George Theuri, and Mr. Pius G. Munene.
The DCI wants Hon. Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi to be charged on three accounts, including soliticiting or inciting others to commit offenses contrary to Section 391 of the Penal Code, conspiracy to commit a felony, which is contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code, and conduct in money laundering activities, which is contrary to Sections 3, 4, and 7 of the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
Hon. James Mwangi Gakuya, Former Embakasi West MP, Hon. George Theuri, and Mr. Piu G Munene to be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.
The DCI claims to have received intelligence reports, which the four are accused of planning, mobilizing, and financing the violent protest that took place on June 25th, 2024, and the subsequent Gen Z-led demonstration in Nairobi.
It has also been alleged that the current serving Embakasi Central and North members of parliament declined to surrender their phones for forensic examination after they had recorded statements on July 31st, 2024.
The investigation unit has embarked on a journey to obtain transaction data from FRC, Safraicom, and banks for further validation, which might pave for indictment as alleged on the tabled charge recommendations.
